What is psychiatric medication management?
Medication management is the ongoing process of evaluating whether medication may help, choosing the right option, starting it safely, and monitoring how it works over time. For many conditions — including ADHD, depression, anxiety, OCD, bipolar disorder, and psychotic disorders — medication is an important part of an effective treatment plan.
Our approach
- Thorough evaluation first. We review your symptoms, history, other medications, medical conditions, and prior treatments before recommending anything.
- Shared decisions. We explain options, expected benefits, and possible side effects in clear language, and respect your preferences.
- Start carefully. We begin at appropriate doses and adjust gradually.
- Regular follow-up. Follow-up visits allow us to track progress, side effects, sleep, appetite, and — in children — growth.
- Safety monitoring. When needed, we order laboratory tests or coordinate with your primary care provider.
- Beyond the prescription. Visits also include supportive psychotherapy and psychoeducation.
Medication management for children and teens
Prescribing for young people requires extra care. Our child and adolescent psychiatry services involve parents in every decision, explain options in age-appropriate ways, and monitor closely at each visit.
If you are already taking psychiatric medication
If you are transferring care from another provider, bring a list of your current medications and doses, and any records you have. We will review your history and continue or adjust treatment as appropriate. Please note that we may need time to evaluate before refilling certain medications.
